Whatever production issues delayed the launch of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 appear to have been resolved. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun today confirmed that the new wearable will be announced in early June.
The Mi Band 2 first surfaced in late April when Jun himself teased it at an event. Speculation suggested that it would be formally announced at a May 10th event for the new Xiaomi Mi Max. Just days before the event, Jun confirmed the launch had been delayed after Huami CEO, Huang Wang, took to social media to say that unspecified problems had slowed down production. Huami manufactures Xiaomi’s wearables. Jun added that the new wearable would be announced about a month later than expected. Today’s announcement confirms that timeline.
While Jun revealed little about the Mi Band 2 itself, we know that it will come with a display, allowing for far more information to be displayed without having to rely on a paired smartphone. Leaked images have confirmed that it will be able to display everything from steps taken and speed to calories burned and the battery level.
There is still no word on pricing for the Xiaomi Mi Band 2. While it may not be as cheap as the original Mi Band thanks to the addition of the display, the price is still expected to be quite low. As for availability, it will likely launch first in China. It remains to be seen what the company’s global plans for its latest wearable might be.
