Samsung had originally hoped to put its Samsung Pay mobile payment service on the Gear S2 last year. It missed its goal and was forced late last year to push the release out to this year. Nearly a year after unveiling its NFC-equipped smartwatch, Samsung is finally making good on its promise – albeit as a public beta for the Bluetooth-only models for now.
To start using Samsung Pay on your Gear S2, you will need to have the latest versions of the Gear S2 software (version R720XXU2CPC5 or higher) and Samsung Gear app. You will find a new menu option for Samsung Pay Beta on the latter. It will in turn invite you to download the beta version of the Samsung Pay app to manage your credit cards and payments.
Once you have all your payment cards set up, the scroll wheel will let you easily switch between them before you make your purchase.
There are a few more caveats:
- Samsung Pay on the Gear S2 is currently only available in the U.S.
- Only the Bluetooth versions of the Gear S2 are currently supported
- Payments are only supported through NFC as the Samsung Gear S2 does not support MST
There is no word at this point on how long the beta period for Samsung Pay on the Gear S2. It’s also unclear if it will be available in all countries where the mobile payment platform is already available (or coming to later this year like Canada).
