Samsung launched the Gear Fit, a fitness-focused wearable, back at MWC 2014. It featured a 1.84-inch Curved Super AMOLED display and not only tracked health and fitness data but could also display a range of notifications when paired with a Samsung smartphone. Newly leaked images obtained by Evan Blass (none other than famed @evleaks) have revealed what appears to be the successor to the original Gear Fit. The wearable is referred to as the Samsung Gear Fit 2 but the name has yet to be be confirmed.
Unlike earlier rumours that suggested that the Gear Fit 2 would be round and look much like the Gear S2 smartwatch, the new images instead reveal a device very similar to the original. The new model is said to be “slightly more curved and ergonomic” but it retains the slender rectangular display form factor. The biggest improvement appears to be the addition of a dedicated GPS chipset to improve the accuracy of various distance-tracking functions. Little else has been revealed about it so far.
Samsung will also unveil new wireless earbuds called the Samsung Gear IconX. Not just earbuds though, they will also function as a fitness tracker and standalone digital music player thanks to 4GB of flash storage in one of the buds. They will also be touch-controlled and dust and water resistant. To recharge them, you’ll simply need to pop them back into their charging case.
The source behind these pictures did not provide availability and pricing details. Based on what we have seen so far, it’s likely that the Samsung Gear Fit 2 will sell for about the same price as the original (about US$200 when it first came out).
