OnePlus CEO Carl Pei recently confirmed that the company once entertained the thought of building its own smartwatch. The company got as far as finishing the design before it decided to put a stop to the project to remain focused on smartphones. Pei yesterday took to Twitter to give us a glimpse of what this OnePlus smartwatch might have looked like.
The sketches date back to last year. As Pei puts it in his tweet, “What could have been but never will be. Sketches circa 2015.” They reveal very little except for the interesting idea that the main module would be removeable, presumably to then slide into a different band accessory or perhaps into a necklace. The sketches also show that OnePlus was looking at different ways to make this work.
No technical details about the smartwatch are revealed. It’s not clear if OnePlus would have used Android Wear or a different mobile operating system.

It’s not clear at this point if OnePlus will ever get into wearables. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Pei described the smartphone market, especially in China, as “very cruel.” The focus on smartphones was needed to ensure the long-term survival of the company.
