When Qualcomm announced its new Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC and platform earlier today, LG was alongside for the ride. The South Korean company revealed during the event that it is already working on a new LG smartwatch and other wearables that will use the new wearable processor.
Little is known about these new LG devices at this point. We don’t even have a name for the new smartwatch yet but it could end up as the successor to the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE which was cancelled just days after launch.
“LG and Qualcomm Technologies have led the wearable technology space with close collaboration over the last two years and have launched multiple smartwatches and kid watches,” said David Yoon, vice president, wearables, LG Electronics. “We are delighted about Qualcomm Technologies’ next generation wearable plans, are planning to extend our collaboration with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, and look forward to launching new smartwatches and other wearable devices that bring new and innovative use cases to consumers later this year.”
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC offers a number of advantages over the current line of Snapdragon processors. Compared to the Snapdragon 400 which is used in more than 60 wearables currently, it is about 30% smaller but about 25% longer lasting. It also comes with an LTE modem and low-power Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as support for a wider range of sensors.
Perhaps LG will reveal more about this new LG smartwatch at Mobile World Congress when it unveils the new LG G5 smartphone.
