Fitbit kicked off 2016 with the introduction of the Blaze smartwatch and fashionable Alta fitness tracker in quick succession. The company earlier this week announced its second quarter earnings and gave us a glimpse at what it has in store for the rest of the year. Both Chief Executive Officer James Park and Chief Financial Officer Bill Zerella confirmed that Fitbit will unveil some new Fitbit devices before the end of the year.
Needless to say, few details about these new wearables were revealed. Park would only confirm that “We have additional new products to come this year” on the analyst call that followed the earnings announcement. In a separate interview, Zerella shed a bit more light on the situation, saying that “These will be upgrades of existing products, which actually will give us the strongest lineup of new and compelling devices.”
Fitbit later issued a further statement, adding that “Regardless of the language used to describe new products, the products that we are introducing later this year are not just software upgrades, but will have exciting new features and designs.”
As for what new Fitbit devices are coming, conjecture and rumours suggest updated versions of the Fitbit Flex and Fitbit Charge, some of its oldest products, will replace the original models. For example, the Fitbit Flex has not been updated since being released in 2013.
As for its financial results, Fitbit sold some 5.7 million devices during its second quarter. Revenues increased 46% year-over-year to US$586.5 million (about CA$765.6 million).
