As the wearables market begins to mature, a growing number of manufacturers are beginning to develop components specific to these devices. Samsung recently announced an all-in-one Bio-Processor for health wearables. MediaTek today announced its own solution for active and fitness smart watches. Built around an ARM Cortex-M4 processor, the MediaTek MT2523 is system-in-package (SiP) that offers GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth Low Energy, and a MIPI-supported high-resolution mobile screen.
“The MT2523, with its combination low power and rich features, marks a significant step forward for the smart watch and wristband industries, said JC Hsu, MediaTek’s corporate vice president and general manager of IoT business unit. “Power combined with efficiency has always been the hallmark of MediaTek technology solutions and we are leading the charge in bringing this know-how to IoT products.”
While many current generation wearables require daily charging or specific low-power solutions, the MediaTek MT2523 promises the combination of battery life of up to a week and support for a high-quality display. It is also almost half the size of many current solutions offered by competitors.
The MediaTek MT2523 SiP will be available to device manufacturers sometime in the first half of the year. This suggests that the first wearable devices to use it could be out as early as the second half of the year.
