Google has added a new Virtual Reality product category on the Google Store. Better yet, it is already selling a number of virtual reality smartphone accessories through it.
Go exploring. Tour world-famous landmarks, step into outer space, and relive your favorite vacation photos in VR, all from the comfort of your smartphone.
Three different devices are currently being offered. Along with Google’s own Cardboard, you’ll find the Mattel View-Master VR Starter Pack and the Goggle Tech C1-Glass VR Viewer. Unfortunately, it appears that sales are currently limited to the U.S. Other countries like Canada will let you peruse through the section but lists all products as “not available.” There is no word yet on whether Google plans on opening up its new Virtual Reality section to sales in other countries at a future point.
For those who can order these accessories, the Google Cardboard sells for US$15 (or two for US$25). The Goggle Tech C1-Glass VR Viewer sells for US$14.99 while the Mattel View-Master VR sells for US$29.99 and includes with a preview reel of special content.
Virtual reality is expected to be a major topic at Google I/O 2016. With rumours swirling that Google is readying new VR devices including a plastic version of its Google Cardboard along with an all-in-one headset model, it’s not unrealistic to expect that Google will have an announcement or two to make. Hopefully these will be followed by new devices on the Google Store.
Update (3/1/2016): Google has pulled the virtual reality section from markets where they are not for sale.
