Fitbit Charge 2 and Fitbit Flex 2 coming soon?

Fitbit FlexNewly discovered trademark filings may have revealed what Fitbit has in store for us for the coming months. The company kicked off 2016 with the introduction of the Fitbit Blaze smart fitness watch and the Fitbit Alta fitness band. At least two more devices could be on their way later this year. Fitbit has filed trademark applications for the Fitbit Charge 2 and Fitbit Flex 2.

The new filings suggest that Fitbit will replace its lower-end wearables with new models. This should not be unexpected given that the original Fitbit Flex was released in May 2013 and the Fitbit Charge in November 2014. Both are relatively basic fitness trackers.

The filings themselves reveal little about how the new Fitbit Charge 2 and Flex 2 would improve upon their predecessors. The filing only confirms that the trademarks will be applied to some kind of fitness device:

Pedometers; altimeters; scales and personal weighing scales; multifunctional electronic devices for displaying, measuring, and uploading to the Internet information including time, date, heart rate, global positioning, direction, distance, altitude, elevation, speed, pace, steps taken, calories burned, routes, navigational information, weather information, temperature, wind speed, changes in heart rate, activity level, hours slept, quality of sleep, and silent wake alarm; multifunctional electronic devices that link to mobile phones to control volume and notify users of incoming calls or messages; computer software for wireless data communication for receiving, processing, transmitting and displaying information relating to fitness, body fat, body mass index; computer software for managing information regarding tracking, compliance and motivation with a health and fitness program

It should also be noted that a trademark filing alone does not mean that Fitbit will release either or both devices. Hopefully more information will soon come to light about Fitbit’s plans for the remainder of the year.
