Making smartwatches modular appears to be catching on. The Blocks modular smartwatch is set to begin shipping this fall and the Henlen Watch is now more than mid-way through its own Kickstarter campaign (but sadly looking like it may not meet its funding goals). The UK’s Sam Bond has his own idea of how a modular smartwatch might work. The Timeless Smartwatch can easily be customized with a range of bezels and bands. In fact, the concept is quite similar to what the Henlen Watch proposes.
This design combines the modern functions and capabilities of a wrist wearable than can sync to a smart phone and the traditional aesthetic styling of the iconic watch figure. What makes this design special is it gives consumer a sense of ownership like no other market rival with the option to customise the watch with numerous straps and bezel housings that home the smart core centre piece.
At the heart of Bond’s Timeless Smartwatch is the round smart core. It includes all of the watch’s key components and functionality, including a touchscreen display. Hidden in the crown is the USB port that allows it to be charged and connected to a computer. While the latter may appear odd, the original concept dates back at least a couple of years, perhaps explaining why it does not simply pair with a smartphone instead.
The core fits into any number of bezel housings. These could be offered in a range of materials, styles and colours. These can then be further paired with a range of straps and bands to create a custom smartwatch. Better yet, it is easy to swap out bezel housings and straps to come up with new configurations without having to buy a completely new watch.
As envisioned, the Timeless Smartwatch would come with a 42 mm case and be about 8 mm thick. Other specifications, including the operating system powering it, are not specified.
As some of the initial design sketches suggest, the Timeless Smartwatch could also offer a square dial option, further broadening customization choices.
