The modular Blocks smartwatch Kickstarter project closed last November after raising more than US$1.6 million from more than 5,000 backers. With shipments expected to begin this fall (later than originally expected unfortunately), anyone who missed out on the crowdfunding campaign can now pre-order one as well.
The world’s first modular smartwatch is here. BLOCKS lets you choose the features and designs that best suit your lifestyle and needs.
At the heart of the Blocks smartwatch is the Core module with Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, a 1.39-inch AMOLED display (400 by 400 pixels) with Gorilla Glass and a stainless steel case. It can be customized with a range of upgradeable modules that clip together to double as the watch’s bracelet. Six modules are currently available: Extra Battery, Heart Rate, GPS, Adventure (which combines digital humidity, pressure and temperature sensors in one), Flashlight, and Programmable Button. Additional Blocks modules, including some offered by third party companies, are expected to launch later. It is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
The Blocks smartwatch sells for US$330. That price includes four modules. Additional blocks can be purchased for an extra US$35 each. Shipments are expected to begin in October.
