Nixon unveiled its first smarter watch last year. The Nixon Ultratide surf watch was geared specifically at surfers, offering specific surfing information such as tides. The company yesterday announced the Nixon Mission, billed as “the world’s first ultra-rugged, action sports smartwatch.” Powered by Android Wear and the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, the Nixon Mission is equally comfortable under water and on the snow-covered slopes.
“Our audience leads an intense, outdoor lifestyle and pushes products to the limit. All of our watches have to meet a high standard of durability and water resistance and for many of these participants, a fragile smartwatch is useless,” noted Tyson White, Vice President of Product at Nixon. “With current products splash-proof at best, we knew we had to create a smartwatch that could survive the surf or the first ride down the mountain. We developed the watch in tandem with our world-class surf and snow athletes who lead demanding, rigorous lifestyles. By listening and implementing their feedback, The Mission became a unique collaboration between our athletes and our product team: we’ve created the 4×4 of smartwatches, ruggedly built for extreme situations.”
Along with the usual Android Wear functionality, the Nixon Mission will come preloaded with the Mission app focused on delivering real-time surf and snow condition alerts to your wrist. The Nixon Trace app will also all you to track your sessions, displaying both real-time stats as well as session details later.
The watch itself is built of polycarbonate with a stainless steel roll cage bezel and a Gorilla Glass covered dial. It comes with a water resistance rating of 10 ATM (100 meters).
