Xiaomi smartwatch to be powered by MTK solution?

XiaomiIf and when Xiaomi launches its first smartwatch, it is widely expected that it will do so using the same formula (decent specifications for a low price) that has brought the company so much success in the smartphone space. A few rumours have already hinted at a (relatively) imminent launch and a new one yesterday reconfirmed that such a device is indeed on the way.

Leaker @upleaks yesterday tweeted that the Xiaomi smartwatch does indeed exist. He added that it would be developed by Longcheer, a Chinese design company focused on mobile devices and that it would use a MediaTek System-on-Chip (SOC) and platform.

Last month, a different rumour out of China suggested that Xiaomi would unveil its new smartwatch in November. Selling for as low as 600 Yuan (about US$97 or CA$125), it will reportedly be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. It will come with a 1.3-inch display, 520MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a heart rate monitor.

Last March, Huami CEO Huang Wang revealed during an interview that Xiaomi was working with his company on this new smartwatch. He indicated that the watch would be round and come with a pulse wave velocity identification feature that would use the wearer’s pulse waves (whatever these may be) to authenticate users.

The fact that Xiaomi smartwatch rumours are gathering momentum suggests that an announcement will indeed happen sooner than later.
