Information continues to emerge about the upcoming TAG Heuer smartwatch. The Swiss company announced that it will develop its smartwatch in partnership with Google and Intel but revealed very little about the device itself. We learned afterwards that it will likely sell for about US$1,000 (about CA$1,250) when it launches in late 2015. Now comes word that it will be upgradeable.
TAG Heuer UK Communications Manager Alexandra King told Wareable that, “The watch will change the technology as it develops, Jean-Claude Biver [Ed. note: TAG Heuer’s CEO] was clear about that. We want to be able to change the technology but keep the watch elements.”
Unlike many electronic devices, many traditional watches don’t become obsolete after a couple of years. Instead, many, including many TAG Heuer models, not only keep on ticking (sorry, I could not resist) but often either keep or increase in value. TAG Heuer wants to ensure that the same holds true for its smartwatch. “If your child completed their Masters degree, you might want to give them a watch. We want to create something that will stay on your watch for a lifetime, that’s what Tag Heuer does. And as the technology changes, it will change,” explained King.
Just how the TAG Heuer smartwatch will be upgraded remains to be seen. We will hopefully find out such details when the company unveils it later this year. King’s comments suggest that it will be possible to replace the electronic components with newer ones as new modules are released.
The TAG Heuer smartwatch will be based on the TAG Heuer Carrera – Heuer 01 (pictured above) which was unveiled earlier this week at Baselworld 2015.
