Google has once again updated its Android Platform Versions report and the latest version of Android remains a no-show. This means that more than two months after being unveiled, Android 5.0 Lollipop’s overall share of the Android pie remains below 0.1 percent.
The year-old previous version, Andoid 4.4 KitKat, showed another healthy gain and now accounts for nearly 40 percent of all Android devices. As its share increases, that of Android Jelly Bean (4.1.x to 4.3) continues to steadily drop but still stands at 46 percent. Older versions continue to cling to the chart, still accounting for nearly 15%, even as their share continues to steadily decline.
With Android 5.0 Lollipop updates slowly but surely starting to roll out, perhaps we will see it finally appear on the chart next month.
On the Apple side, iOS 8 steadily continues to make gains. It jumped another 8 percent since late November. Apple’s strong holiday sales and dominance of new device activations over the holidays likely helped this.
Apple and Google regularly publish their platform version reports to help developers know what versions of the operating systems they need to support in their apps. It also gives us a glimpse at the state of the Android and iOS universes at a specific point in time.
