The Samsung Gear S2 is the first Gear smartwatch to be compatible with smartphones other than Samsung’s own. It currently works with a range of smartphones running Android 4.4 or higher and with at least 1.5GB of RAM. A report in September suggested that Samsung was also looking at expanding compatibility to the Apple iPhone. It now appears that Samsung has been able to get this working. It could offer Samsung Gear S2 iOS compatibility as early sometime in the next few weeks.
According to Samsungviet.vn, an iOS app will allow iPhone users to set up and customize their Gear S2. Much as with Android, most features offered by the smartwatch will be supported. The exception will be Samsung-specific apps such as Samsung Pay.
For its part, Samsung has yet to officially comment on how far it has gotten with Samsung Gear S2 iOS compatibility.
It remains to be seen how many iPhone users would opt for the Samsung Gear S2 over the Apple Watch. The latter completely dominated the smartwatch market last quarter and is not expected to relinquish that lead any time soon.
