Rumours back in March suggested that Samsung would use its own octa-core Exynos 7420 processor for the upcoming Samsung Gear A (known back then only as the Samsung Orbis) round-faced smartwatch. This is the same processor that Samsung uses in its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge flagship smartphones. A tweet by @SamsungExynos today gave credence to this rumour. The tweet does not name the Exynos 7420 or the Gear A specifically, mentioning only a “Exynos-powered #wearable.”

The tweet also includes an image of an app tracking heart rate. The display is circular, suggesting that this could be an app for Samsung’s first round smartwatch. If so, the accompanying text is presumably for the same device, effectively confirming that the Gear A will indeed come with an Exynos processor. It still remains to be seen if it will indeed be the Exynos 7420 or not.
The octa-core Exynos 7420 should give the Samsung Gear A better battery life than the processors used in current Gear smartwatches. All other factors being equal, the 14nm architecture and additional cores should allow Samsung cut down on power consumption and perhaps gain an extra day or two of life.
As for the app shown in the tweet, there is nothing to suggest that this could not be an app bound for the Samsung Gear A.
According to the latest rumours, Samsung will unveil the Gear A smartwatch alongside the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA 2015 in early September.
