A report last month suggested that LG Display would once again be Apple’s sole supplier for flexible P-OLED displays for the next-generation Apple Watch. It now appears that Apple has changed its mind and will have at least two suppliers instead. The Korea Herald reports that both Samsung Display and LG Display will provide it with displays next time around.
The move would not be unusual. Apple typically works with two or three suppliers for each major component to ensure that it not only gets competitive pricing but also to reduce the risk of supply shortages.
Little is known about the next-generation Apple Watch at this point. It is expected to be both thinner and lighter than the current models. It could also come with new features like a FaceTime camera and improved Wi-Fi capabilities to improve its ability to function without being tethered to an iPhone.
Recent rumours agree that we are unlikely to see to see the Apple Watch 2 until sometime early next year at the earliest.
At last word, sales of the original Apple Watch hit about 2.79 million units as of mid-June and may well have topped the 3 million mark by now.
