Mobile World Congress only kicked off officially today but there has already been a raft of new device announcements. Among them was a healthy number of new wearable unveilings. But at least one expected announcement failed to materialize. After a raft of rumours about the Samsung Orbis, the round smartwatch failed to appear at Samsung’s latest Unpacked event where the the new Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge and updated Gear VR were unveiled.
Samsung has released six smartwatches since it launched the original Galaxy Gear in 2013. But the market has quickly evolved and where Samsung once stood nearly unopposed, it now faces stiff competition from a range of competitors. According to Smartwatch Group, there are now over 80 smartwatch players.
Samsung looks to be taking a new approach this year. “We’ve been introducing more devices than anybody else,” explains mobile marketing executive vice president Young-hee Lee. “It’s time for us to pause.”
But that pause does not mean that smartwatch development has stopped. She confirmed that Samsung is “working on it” but the objective is “a more perfect product.”
Does this “more perfect” smartwatch come with a round display, a rotating bezel and wireless charging? It just might.
