Polar today announced that the Polar M400 is one step closer today to becoming a full-fledged smartwatch with the addition of Smart Notifications (which are also available on the Polar V800). The same notifications that appear on your smartphone will now appear on your M400 courtesy of firmware version 1.5. The only downside to the news is that smart notifications only work with iOS devices at this time.
Notifications can be configured to be either a light sound or a silent one. You can also choose which notifications to receive by selecting the appropriate ones from your phone’s notification center. A ‘do not disturb’ function also stops all incoming notifications as needed (by default from 2200 to 0700 every day).
To update your Polar M400, simply sync it with FlowSync and let it update your device to firmware 1.5 when you get the notification for an available upgrade. After making sure you have also upgraded your iOS Flow app, simply remove teh M400 pairing from the Flow and it pair it once more with your mobile device. Once the pairing is re-enabled, you will be able to turn on the Smart Notifications by enabling them in General Settings.
Polar is working on bringing smart notifications to Android as well. It attributes the delay to Android’s fragmented landscape when it comes to Bluetooth interoperability. As a result, it requires “that little extra effort” to make sure that notifications will work as well under Android as they do under iOS.
