The Pebble Time, the first colour display smartwatch from Pebble, was announced earlier today. The Pebble Time Kickstarter campaign that launched with the announcement only hours ago has not only already reached its funding level but also blown by it in record time (more than US$5 million raised at this point). While much of the attention today is on the latest smartwatch, there is nonetheless good news for current Pebble owners as well.
Existing Pebble and Pebble Steel users will not be left out in the cold. The company has confirmed that the new Pebble Timeline user interface will be rolled out to its previous smartwatches in a cursory entry on its Kickstarter project page. “Timeline will work on Pebble and Pebble Steel (exact date TBD),” states the page without providing details as to when the update will be rolled out.
Timeline adopts a chronological approach to organize everything from alerts, news and notifications to apps. The basic concept is that items most recent or closest in the future are the easiest to reach quickly. For example, one button press “back in time” would bring up the most recent event, whether it be a notification or something else. It also supports new app faces with glanceable content to make it easier to quickly get information from an app.
Pebble also confirmed that existing Pebble apps will work with Timeline. It is inviting developers to upgrade their apps to support color.
