OnePlus, the Chinese company that entered the smartphone market last year with the OnePlus One smartphone that managed to strike a balance between price and more than decent specifications, has since released the OnePlus 2 and this week the OnePlus X. Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, this week revealed that the company’s ambitions did not stop at smartphones. It very nearly jumped into the wearables space with a fitness tracker but decided to cancel the project at the last minute.
Pei told Techradar this week that “we had a fitness tracker and Bluetooth speaker in development, but we cancelled both one month before launch.” Why did OnePlus change its mind about OnePlus wearables at what was effectively the last minute? “We asked ourselves, what is the goal?” explained Pei. “We decided we needed to focus on smartphones, to ensure we’re launching quality products and leave the wearables and speakers to the people who know what they’re doing.”
Pei added that OnePlus will continue to focus on its two smartphone lines. It has no plan at this time to expand its portfolio to cover a wider range of price points. The company is also looking to improve its customer service and continue to develop its Android-based OxygenOS.
Here’s hoping that OnePlus will reconsider its decision to keep out of the wearables market. Perhaps in time to be announced alongside the OnePlus 3 or the OnePlus X 2?
