Apple formally unveiled the Apple Watch in March before launching it in April. Since then, it has quickly established itself as the most popular smartwatch. While Apple has yet to reveal specific numbers, Canalys estimates that it has shipped more than 7 million watches to date and completely eclipsed its competition.
Despite dominating the market, many have found that the Apple Watch is not without its limitations. The watchOS 2.0 firmware update addressed many initial shortcomings but Apple is certainly focused on further improvements, including on the hardware side.
Chinese site UDN.com now reports that Quanta chairman Barry Lam recently told attendees at a meeting in Paris that the next-generation Apple Watch is already in development. He expects it will be unveiled by the end of the second quarter next year with shipments kicking off in the third quarter in limited quantities.
Without providing any details about the next Apple Watch, Lam promised that it will come with “fully upgraded hardware and software.” This suggests that Apple could unveil watchOS 3.0 alongside new hardware. The latter might include new sensors and a cellular modem (Android Wear now supports this feature natively)
Could the next-generation Apple Watch look like the concept above?
