Next Android Wear version to add Wi-Fi support

Android Wear logoA day after Apple unveiled pricing and availability details about the upcoming Apple Watch, details are emerging about the next version of Android Wear, Google’s Android extension for wearables. A source familiar with Google’s Android Wear roadmap has told The Verge that the next version will add a number of new features.

With a small number of Android Wear devices already supporting Wi-Fi, Google looks set to add native Wi-Fi support to Android Wear. This will allow features like notifications and Google Now to work even when a Bluetooth connection is unavailable – assuming the device supports Wi-Fi in the first place.

The update is also expeced to include gesture control and improvements to the way that users can access both Android Wear applications and contacts. The former will allow users to use gestures to control their smartwatch. For example, a flick of the wrist would take you to your next notification.

There is no word if this next update will also add iOS compatibility as one recent rumour suggested. It is also not known when this next Android Wear version could be announced although the upcoming Google I/O 2015 in late May is a likely candidate for an announcement.
