Pebble today launched a countdown on its website hinting at some kind of announcement on February 24th. While the company has revealed little about what it has in mind, 9to5mac has learned that Pebble will unveil a new watch. Unlike the models to date, the new Pebble smartwatch will sport a colour display and still manage battery life on par with that of current models.
According to multiple sources, the second-generation Pebble smartwatch will sport a new slightly wider colour “e-paper-like display.” While a touchscreen display is not in the cards, new hardware will include a microphone which could would with Nuance voice recognition software to offer support for voice commands, a new Cortex M4 processor, a 6-axis gyroscope and an improved backlight.
Limited company resources will prevent Pebble from adding a heart rate monitor but it remains on the company’s long-term roadmap. Instead, Pebble could also announce future “Smart Bands” incorporating not only a heart rate monitor but additional sensors as well.
On the firmware side, the Pebble operating system has been completely revamped. With former webOS designers onboard, the new OS will be “dramatically different.”
As for pricing for the new Pebble smartwatch, the report suggests that it will be on par with that of the Pebble Steel which currently sells for US$199 (about CA$250).
