The Moto 360 was one of the most talked about smartwatches in 2014. And it was certainly the most attractive Android Wear device to emerge last year. Competitors are now catching up and begun to give Motorola some healthy competition. Now owned by Lenovo, the company is already working on new products but we will not see them until the latter part of the year.
With Mobile World Congress in full swing, President Rick Osterloh told Re/code that Motorola will continue to focus on those areas where it has done well in recent times. That means more inexpensive smartphones (like the recently announced second generation Moto E) and new wearables. “We’ll be launching more products in the later part of the year,” he said, speaking about the latter in particular.
He also revealed that Motorola has no plans to launch a smartwatch powered by its own software. Both LG and Samsung offer smartwatches powered by Android Wear as well as their own operating systems. “We just think that’s a terrible idea,” Osterloh said, adding< “We’re pretty happy with Android wear, and that is what we are going to stay with.”
With Google’s backing , Osterloh expects that Android Wear will reach a critical mass that will attract developers and ultimately lead to an app ecosystem that offers the diversity that consumers crave.
Motorola will continue to do its own engineering but will now benefit from Lenovo’s supply chain which should reduce component costs “significantly.”
Needless to say, Osterloh revealed little today about these new Motorola wearables.
