While Motorola yesterday unveiled two new Moto X and a new Moto G smartphones, it did not announce a successor to its Moto 360 smartwatch as we had been hoping. That it’s coming is not in question but when remains unclear although an FCC filing now points to a late summer or early fall launch.
While the Lenovo-owned company was busy showing off its latest smartphones, its new Moto 360 smartwatch was busy getting its FCC certification. Documents that popped up on the FCC website yesterday do not identify the device by name but as a “Wrist-worn device, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth” as well as a “Smart Watch.” Sounds like a new Moto 360 unless Motorola also has a completely new wearable up (on?) its sleeve.
Additional details show that the device with FCC ID IHDT6UA1 will come with Bluetooth 3.0+EDR and 4.0 LE and WiFi (802.11b/g/n). Unfortunately, the usual confidentiality request means that more useful information like the user guide and photos are not available to us at this point.
The FCC label also confirms that the watch has been approved for both Canada and the U.S. While this is not a guarantee in itself that it will launch in both countries, we would be very surprised if it did not.
Past rumours have suggested that the new Moto 360, codenamed Smelt during development, will come a display that is completely round (no more black bar at the bottom) and with a higher resolution (360 by 360 pixels) and a faster processor.
If nothing else, it would appear that Motorola will soon be hosting another event, this one hopefully dedicated to its new Moto 360 smartwatch.
