Movado earlier this week unveiled the Movado BOLD Motion smartwatch. Much as Tag Heuer did with the new Carrera Connected, the Swiss watchmaker partnered with a technology company to develop its smartwatch rather than going it alone. In this case, Movado collaborated with HP Inc., the consumer-focused half of the recently split Hewlett-Packard.
Unlike many smartwatches, the Movado BOLD Motion does not feature a touchscreen. Instead, the analog watch incorporates blue or white LED lights around the circumference of the dial to keep “the clean, modern appeal that makes it a Movado.”
Alerts for everything from upcoming appointments and incoming messages to social media updates are delivered using visual cues as well as subtle vibrations. Specific LEDs will blink to alert you to different alert types. Unfortunately, it is not possible to respond to these alerts directly from the watch. The Movado BOLD Motion also acts as a basic daily fitness tracker, essentially a step tracker, but it lacks more advanced sensors such as a heart rate monitor.

A companion app, available for both Android and iOS, will let you customize your alerts and provides additional information about your daily step goals.
The 44mm Movado BOLD Motion is available in two different unisex styles. The first sports a stainless steel case with black PVD-finished bezel, round black dial with teal LED indicators and black silicone strap with stainless steel buckle. The second is nearly identical but comes with white LED indicators and a black silicone strap with black PVD buckle. Both are water-resistant to 5 ATM.
As for Movado’s partner, it gained experience building smartwatches earlier this year when it worked U.S. designer Michael Bastien to come up with the MB Chronowing. The Movado BOLD Motion is its first smartwatch under its new “Engineered by” program.
The Movado Bold Motion will be offered on the Movado online store for US$695 (about CA$925). It will be available “in time for the holidays.”
