Motorola gave buyers the ability to customize the look of their smartphones in 2013 when it launched MotoMaker alongside the first Moto X smartphone. While current options are mostly limited to cosmetic choices, Motorola is looking to broadening choices to include hardware options like different screen sizes and different functionalities. The company could soon also bring MotoMaker customization options to its Moto 360 smartwatch.
Asked about such a move by CNET in an interview this week, Motorola Chief Operating Officer Rick Osterloh simply said, “Could be. We have no major announcements in this area, but I think your intuition is very good.”
Offering customization options could allow Motorola to distinguish its Moto 360 and other werables from the growing number of competitors on the market. In fact, Osterloh sees customization as “the power alley of our strategy.” As he explained during the interview, “We’re driving toward consumer choice because we think as these become more personal devices, this becomes increasingly important.”
Osterloh also said that the company is pleased with how well the Moto 360 has sold so far. Without providing numbers, he described sales as exceeding expectations.
Perhaps Motorola will introduce MotoMaker for wearables when it unveils its next-generation smartwatch later this year.
