The Moto 360 successor (codenamed Motorola Smelt during development) is one step closer to a formal announcement this week. It appears to have received its Bluetooth certification from the Bluetooth SIG.
While the compliance listing does not mention the Moto 360 (or any other device) by name, the model number certainly suggests that it is none other than the Moto 360 (2nd generation). Whereas the original passed through the Bluetooth SIG with model number BTMW01, this new device carries the number BTMW03, suggesting a followup to the first.
The listing describes the device as a “Motorola Android Device,” eliminating the possibility that it could could some kind of Bluetooth accessory.
Better yet, the original Moto 360 popped up on the Bluetooth SIG only a week before it was formally unveiled at a Motorola event at its Chicago headquarters. Could an announcement not be far for this Moto 360 successor? With Google I/O 2015 taking place at the end of May, it could well be.
Past rumours have indicated that the Moto 360 successor will look very similar to the original. It is expected to benefit from upgraded hardware including a display that is completely round (no more black bar at the bottom) and with a higher resolution (360 by 360 pixels).
