In a surprising move, Microsoft is returning to its roots. The company today announced the launch of MS-DOS Mobile, a new mobile operating system designed for its Lumia smartphones. Recognizing that its Windows Phone operating system has failed to catch on with audiences across the globe, it has decided to return to “where productivity started for millions of people” by launching a beautifully simple OS.
Tom Messett, from the marketing team at Microsoft Lumia, said: “MS-DOS Mobile allows us to look proudly back, while at the same time moving us defiantly forwards. It’s simple, effective productivity re-imagined through the medium of DOS.”

Anyone who has used MS-DOS in the past will immediately feel at home. All the commands you need are at your fingertips at the familiar c:\ prompt. Needless to say, it also allows you to run a number of already installed applications
Among the commands available are some classics such as:
- DATE: A reminder that today is April 1st
- VER: The current MS-DOS version
- FORMAT: Now with Cortana helping out to prevent accidents
- A: To access your floppy drive
- HELP: See a list of more commands
A technical preview of MS-DOS Mobile is now available as a free download on the Windows Phone Store.
“Black and white text has never looked so good.”
