Louis Moinet Jurassic Watch comes with dinosaur bone dial

Louis Moinet Jurassic Watch

If two of your passions include traditional watches and dinosaurs, the Louis Moinet Jurassic Watch should probably be at the top of your wishlist. Already known for offering watch pieces that feature exotic materials such as fragments of lunar meteorites and “other rocks from the far-flung corners of the universe,” the latest offering from Louis Moinet sports a dial made from Jurassic-era dinosaur bone.

The genuine bone comes from a 150-million-year-old dinosaur bone from a sauropod, a group of large herbivore dinosaurs that included the diplodocus and the supersaurus. The bone in question was discovered in North America and authenticated by renowned geologist Dr Andreas Stucki in association with the Aathal Dinosaur Museum in Switzerland. Each dial takes about a week to prepare and gives the watch a unique look.

“This type of masterpiece is highly charged with emotion,” explains Jean-Marie Schaller, CEO of Ateliers Louis Moinet. “For one thing, together with our craftsman Mr Daniel Haas, we’re working on an extremely rare material – fossilized dinosaur! In addition, just like the meteorites we already work with, this legacy from millions of years ago has come down to us today in excellent condition. Even though it’s 150 million years old, this fossilized dinosaur looks quite contemporary. Its texture recalls that of an abstract canvas; it’s a real honour to be able to work with a material like this.”

The watch itself is based on the company’s Mecanograph chronometer. Along with the unique dial, it sports a date window at 3 o’clock, a seconds sub-dial with a concentric Clou de Paris pattern at 9 o’clock. It also uses the company’s new Energie Plus process, an automatic pawl winding system.
