LG last week unveiled the LG Watch Urbane, a premium version of the LG G Watch R which was unveiled last year. Just days ahead of MWC 2015, LG has now announced a second new smartwatch, the LG Watch Urbane LTE which adds “all the communication capabilities of a smartphone in a polished, metal wristwatch.”
“The LG Watch Urbane LTE is an example of the kind of innovation that’s possible when you’re the industry leader in LTE technology,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “This smartwatch breaks new ground with the world’s first LTE connectivity and the real-watch styling of a high-end modern classic watch. It embodies our philosophy, innovation for a better life.”
While the two watches share a common name, the LG Watch Urbane LTE adds a number of new features. Aside from the ability to make and answer calls as well as send and receive text messages, it can support push-to-talk (PTT). It also adds Wi-Fi and NFC (with support for mobile payments) and a much larger 700mAh battery.
Perhaps the most interesting difference has to do with the operating system. Gone is Android Wear in favour of LG’s own LG Wearable Platform operating system, “developed specifically for the company’s proprietary wearable products.” LG makes no mention of webOS specifically but it bears many similarities to the webOS-powered watch shown off at CES 2015.
The Urbane LTE also features three buttons on the right side for “easy access to a number of functions without having to swipe through multiple menu screens.”
