LG confirmed back in May that it would release a maintenance patch to enable Wi-Fi connectivity on the LG G Watch R. Users today began to report that LG has finally begun to push out the update.
Despite having the necessary hardware to support the feature, the LG G Watch R could not initially take advantage of it as it “was not designed with Wi-Fi in mind.” The update rectifies this issue.
After the update, the LG G Watch will have a new “Wi-Fi settings” option. It lists available Wi-Fi hotspots that the smartwatch can connect to.
The more recent LG Watch Urbane already supports Wi-Fi connectivity and will not require a firmware update to enable this feature.
Wi-Fi connectivity was probably the most interesting feature to have been added to Android Wear 5.1.1. It allows a smartwatch to connect to a Wi-Fi network and continue to receive various notifications and perform certain actions even a paired smartphone is not within Bluetooth range.
The LG G Watch R update is being rolled out over the air. A phased deployment is likely so it may be a few days yet before it hits your own smartwatch.
