Most current generation smartwatches need to be charged up at the end of the day. A new battery unveiled this week by LG Chem, could help alleviate those tense hours at the end of the day when you’re not sure if your smartwatch will be able to keep up with you. The new LG Chem battery sports a hexagonal design that allows it to better use the small amount of space available inside a smartwatch. It’s enough to reportedly increase battery life by as much as 25% when compared to traditional rectangular batteries.
LG Chem designed its new hexagonal battery specifically for smartwatches and more particularly for those with circular cases. It was developed with a top-tier technology company. While the identity of this partner remains a mystery, an LG spokesperson confirmed it was neither Apple or LG Electronics. Could it be Samsung which is getting ready to unveil its first round smartwatch later this year?
LG Chem has already begun to ship its new hexagonal battery which is manufactured in Nanjing, China, to a number of consumer electronics companies. With expectations that not only Samsung but also a number of other companies will unveil new round smartwatches in the coming months, it could show up in a number of new devices before year’s end.
LG Chem is also planning to offer other battery shapes. Among them could be an L-shaped one and a rectangular model with a hole in the middle.
