Jawbone this week announced it has begun to push out a new firmware update for the UP2, UP3 and UP4 fitness trackers. It updates what many have considered some glaring omissions to date.
First up, the UP3 and UP4 will both gain daily passive heart rate monitoring (the UP2 lacks the necessary hardware to support this feature). Both the UP3 and UP4 already measured your resting heart rate which is captured first thing in the morning before heart rate is affected by any external factors such as food, exercise, or stress. With passive heart rate monitoring, the UP3 and UP4 will periodically measure your heart rate through the day to give you a better sense of how your heart rate can be affected by your daily routine.
Jawbone has also added Automatic Sleep Detection to the UP2, UP3 and UP4. You will no longer need to manually trigger the sleep mode monitoring. It will instead do so automatically now. The UP3 and UP4 will continue to track your sleep through its stages (Wake, REM, Light and Deep sleep).
While Jawbone has eliminated the once necessary tapping to switch mode, you will still be able to tap away to dismiss Smart Alarms and Reminders and for band pairing. And if you prefer to manually switch modes, you will still be able to do that as well.
To update to the latest UP2, UP3 or UP4 firmware, you will first need to download the latest version of the UP app (version 4.7 for Android and iOS). Then, you will be able to download the update from within the app to upgrade your Jawbone fitness tracker.
