Jawbone unveils Jawbone UP2 to succeed UP24

Jawbone UP2Jawbone yesterday unveiled not only the UP4 but also the Jawbone UP2 to succeed the older UP24 activity tracker. Selling for US$99.99, it will sit between the entry level Jawbone Move which sells for US$49 and the higher end UP3 (US$179) and UP4 (US$199) models.

“With UP3 now shipping to pre-order customers, we are excited to announce UP2 as the stylish successor to UP24,” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone. “And at just $99 we believe it is a best-in-class wearable appealing to the largest sector of the market.”

Designed by Yves Behar, the UP2 is smaller than both the older UP24 and the new UP3 but is not as feature-rich as its more expensive sibling. While it sports the tri-axis accelerometer and three single color LEDs (Blue for sleep, orange for activity, and white for notifications), it lacks the array of bioimpedance sensors that can measure heart rate, respiration and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), and skin and ambient temperature sensors (as well as the UP4’s mobile payment capabilities). It offers activity tracking, sleep tracking and food logging.

Like the UP3 and UP4, the Jawbone UP2 connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth to provide real-time updates. It also works with the Jawbone UP app which now includes Smart Coach, “an intelligent system that learns your habits, and gives you personalized guidance and feedback to help you reach your goals.” For example, it might encourage you to go to bed earlier if it finds that doing so means that you are more active the next day.

The Jawbone UP2 sells for US$99.99 and is now available in Black Diamond from Jawbone.com, BestBuy.com and Amazon (and Best Buy by April 19th) in the U.S. Additional colours including Light Grey Hex are coming soon.
