The Apple Watch is widely expected to quickly become the most popular smartwatch on the market when it launches next month. While competitors may be putting on a brave public face, it’s quite likely that many are nervous. Google, whose Android Wear platform launched last year with disappointing sales, may have come up with a new way to take on its upcoming rival. It may soon launch an iOS-compatible version of Android Wear.
French publication 01net reports that Google is getting ready to launch an iOS version of its Android Wear app, making it compatible with the Apple iPhones. Today, Android Wear is only compatible with Android 4.3+ devices.
There are already a number of smartwatches compatible with iOS today. Among these are the Pebble and the Withings Activité smartwatch lines. The addition of the Android Wear range, including new models such as the recently announced Huawei Watch and LG Watch Urbane would give Apple users a number of new options to choose from. After all, there may be one or two Apple customers preferring an Android Wear watch over the Apple watch.
While unsubstantiated, the report is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. In fact, Google pulled a similar move with Glass. Initially only compatible with Android, the company later made its MyGlass app compatible with iOS devices.
Perhaps Google I/O 2015 in late May will include the announcement of an iOS Android Wear app.
