HTC may have shelved plans to release a smartwatch but it is still planning to jump into the wearables market early this year. Recent rumours have suggested that HTC will instead focus on the health and fitness market. A partnership announced at CES 2015 with Under Armour gives credence to these reports. Forbes has also weighed in with its own claim that HTC will unveil a fitness band rather than a smartwatch at HTC’s MWC 2015 event.
Few details about the band have been provided but Forbes suggests that the new HTC flagship smartphone (the HTC M9) which will also be announced in March will come with the UA Record fitness tracking app and connect to the band.
In itself, this latest report adds nothing new to past rumours. What it does though is give further weight to the body of past rumours that HTC will indeed soon offer its first wearable even if it’s not the oft-rumoured smartwatch many had expected.
As for UA Record, the platform not only not only tracks your personal health data with a variety of fitness tracking tools (such as MapMyRun and MapMyRide) but also compete in a variety of fitness challenges with up to 20 friends. It also gives you access to a range of content including videos, nutrition information, training methodologies and injury prevention.
