HTC bringing wearable to MWC 2015? (Updated)

Rumoured HTC smartwatchHTC has already invited the press to an event it will hold on the eve of MWC 2015. While the spotlight is likely to be on its next flagship smartphone, codenamed the HTC Hima, we surmised just yesterday that the Taiwanese company could also use the event to unveil its first wearable, possibly a smartwatch.

Chinese leaker @upleaks today suggests that HTC does indeed plan to announce its first wearable at the event. He adds that while a couple of projects have been cancelled, HTC has now reached the testing stage for a third project. Details about this device are slim but it will not be powered by Android Wear.

As far back at MWC 2014, HTC had been rumoured to be working on three wearable devices, two smartwatches and a fitness band. Since then, there have been reports that HTC had cancelled some of these projects. The HTC CWZ had been rumoured to be the Android Wear-powered HTC One Wear smartwatch while the HTC WWZ may well have been HTC’s take on the Qualcomm Toq.

As for that third project, early rumours suggest it will be an electronic bracelet with a slim touchscreen display. As with other such devices, it should be able to track various activities and offer some remote control features (music and camera controls for example).  But HTC has promised something rather unique that would offer a “really compelling reason to strap it on your wrist,” suggesting that it could also do more as well.

With HTC having recently entered into a new partnership with Under Armour, this new HTC wearable could well integrate the new Under Armour fitness platform.

Needless to say, we’ll bring you all the details on March 1 as well as any rumours that could shed light on this.

Update: Bloomberg today reports that its sources have told it that HTC will indeed bring a smartwatch to its MWC 2015 event.  It provides few details but suggests that it will indeed use Under Armour’s new fitness service.
