Samsung today released the Software Development Kit (SDK) for its “next generation of the Gear device” that it had first teased last month. As hoped, it confirms a number of details about the device Samsung currently calls the “Next Gear,” better known so far as the Samsung Gear A or Project Orbis. Among them are some key Samsung Gear A specifications.
As widely expected, it will be Samsung’s first smartwatch with a round display. Measuring 1.18 inches in diameter, the Next Gear will support a resolution of 360 by 360 pixels (305 PPI).
Supporting documents included in the SDK also confirm that it will sport a rotating bezel to control various functions. For example, it will allow you to control the volume in the media player, scroll through contacts and even work as a keyboard.
At least one image suggests that it will come a metal frame and a metal crown. Under the hood, it will have a number of sensors including GPS, an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a heart rate monitor, a pressure sensor and a magnetic sensor (but not an ambient light sensor). It also appears that Samsung will offer both Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. It will use Bluetooth to connect to both smartphones and other Bluetooth accessories such as headsets.
The Samsung Gear A is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA 2015 in early September.
