High-end watchmakers are not the only ones jumping into the wearables space. Fashion companies are also rushing in. The latest to announce plans to offer what it calls connected accessories later this year is the Fossil Group. Greg McKelvey, Fossil’s chief strategy and marketing officer, yesterday outlined the company’s plans to analysts.
Fossil plans to offer ‘multiple accessories and price points” both under the Fossil brand as well as its licensed brands Michael Kors and Emporio Armani.
Having collaborated with both Google and Intel, Fossil will unveil its own wearable technology platform. Little information was provided about it but it will span a range of devices. Its “product ecosystem” includes both watches with analog and digital displays as well as a line of jewelry with and without a digital display.
It appears that all will support wireless charging and will pair with a smartphone to offer a wider range of functions including the usual notifications and activity tracking. Given that Fossil was announced as an Android Wear partner last year, it is likely that at least some of these will run Google’s wearables platform.
There is no word on when specifically this year the Fossil Group wearables will launch. But they could be joined with additional connected accessories from Fossil’s other licensed brands which include Burberry, DKNY and Tory Burch.
