One of if not our favourite smartwatch concepts remains that of Gábor Balogh. It blends the traditional look and feel of a high-end watch with the functionality delivered by a smartwatch. Andrei Moldovan has taken a similar approach and come up with his own concept that blends “modern functionality and classic design.”
At first glance, the unnamed smartwatch concept retains a very traditional round watch design with a crown and flanking buttons (which act as Home and Back buttons). A classic silver metal case and black leather band would work equally well on a regular watch. But like Balogh’s concept, it also offers a range of smartwatch functions. The homescreen features a traditional analog display but adds subtle notifications for emails, missed calls and voice messages where other watches might feature subdials.
These three notification areas also act as buttons as one gets deeper into the watch’s functions. For example, when a call comes in, they become button to reject or answer the call or send a text reply. In the message app, they serve to either reply or delete the message or call the person. Switch to the music player screen and they become the play/pause, previous and next controls.
Depending on the app, the watch can display up to eight such buttons. For example, anyone using a number of social media apps will find up to eight easily accessible from the social media hub.
Concepts such as Andrei Moldovan’s smartwatch prove that smartwatches can blend the style and elegance of a traditional watch with the usefulness of an electronic device without looking like a blocky 80’s style calculator watch.
