As we have seen in recent weeks and months, smartwatch manufacturers are all looking to make their devices more fashionable. Many models now strive to match the looks of traditional watches, opting for more classic designs with round displays and retaining features like the crown. When it comes to the display itself, some do so with analogue watch face skins while other try to incorporate digital elements into a traditional mechanical design. Examples of the latter include the Whithings Activité Pop and the just announced Mondaine Helvetica No 1 Smart. The concept featured today on Concept Sunda brings a similar design aesthetic to the world of single hand watches.
Designed by France’s Guillaume Muller, the single handed mechanical smartwatch incorporates a digital subdial in the lower half of the larger mechanical dial. This half-circle display can be used to show everything from calendar events to incoming notifications. The automatic watch is billed as “a full hybrid concept.”
It’s not clear if the countdown sub-dial is digital as well but it appears to be. It’s also unclear whether it could be used for other functions.
It would presumably use Bluetooth to connect to a smartphone. It might also include vibration alerts to make it easier to know when new events or notifications come up.
If nothing else, this single handed mechanical smartwatch concept suggests reinforces that smartwatches do not need to be all digital display affairs.
