Concept Sunday: Hands-free EPIC watch by José Manuel Otero

EPIC watch concept by OteroDespite smartwatches garnering much of our attention these days, traditional watches are not at risk of disappearing any time soon. Baselworld is in full swing with manufacturers unveiling a range of new watches. Meanwhile, designers continue to dream up new concept watches. Among these is José Manuel Otero who came up with the EPIC watch earlier this year.

Calling the EPIC watch a traditional watch may be a bit of a stretch. Gone are the hands that indicate hours, minutes and seconds in favour of three sub-dials that provide this information instead. The largest of these, positioned in the center, gives you the hours. Minutes are indicated by the top dial and seconds by the bottom one using etched lines.

The EPIC watch also comes with a more traditional calendar with date at three o’clock and the day of week and the month at nine o’clock.

Otero expects that the EPIC watch could eventually come in a range of materials including steel, ceramic, titanium, carbon fiber, and “naturally much more noble metals.”
