Concept Sunday: Glycount diabetic management wearable

Glycount wearable conceptThere were almost 390 million people with diabetes across the world in 2014. There are 67 million in India alone. This prompted Indrajeet Bakhale to come up with Glycount, a wearable diabetic management device. It does away with the traditional skin pricking in favour of a future technology that will “enable us to measure blood sugar level instantaneously and continuously.”

Worn around the wrist as a traditional watch or smartwatch, the Glysense sensors embedded in the strap are in constant contact with your skin and continuously measure your sugar level. An LED on the side changes colour based on your sugar level bracket while a low-energy e-ink display can provide additional information such as how your blood sugar level (BSL) is trending and whether you need to take any actions. It will also remind you when it’s time for a dose of insulin.

The Glycount can also connect to your smartphone or PC to provide additional information. Data can also be shared with your family or doctor.

While the Glycount relies on future technology, such a sensor may not be so far away. Continuous glucose monitors (CGM) already on the market today rely on a small sensor placed under the skin to transmit information to a wireless device.
