Apple is expected to unveil new details about the upcoming Apple Watch at its next press event on Monday, March 9. While the company has yet to officially comment on battery life, reports suggest that it will, like most smartwatches on the market today, last about a day. Under heavier use, it might not even make it through the day. Enter the Reserve Strap, a strap that could significantly extend battery life.
Billed as “the most indispensable Apple accessory ever,” the Reserve Strap is in fact similar to Pebble’s own Smartstraps. It uses the watch strap to extend functionality of the smartwatch itself. In this case, embedded batteries could extend the life of the Apple Watch by as much as 125%.
The first concept consists of a silicon band with an embedded 400mAh lithium polymer battery. An inductive charging cradle sits between your wrist and the Apple Watch to wirelessly deliver power to the watch via magnetic inductive charging.
The team behind the Apple Watch Reserve Strap consists of Lane Musgrave,a former software designer for the Nike+ and the Nike Fuel-band apps, and John Arrow, founder and Chairman of Mutual Mobile, a mobile consulting company.
The Reserve Strap is still at the conceptual stage but can already be pre-ordered for US$249.99. The company warns that they are still “refining the design and engineering of the Reserve Watch” and don’t have a firm release date or price point yet. The final design decisions will presumably follow the launch of the Apple Watch.
