Component supplier hints at disappointing Apple Watch sales

Apple WatchApple recently announced its latest financial results. While it revealed how many iPhones and iPads it sold, it did not reveal any Apple Watch sales numbers. Company CEO Tim Cook only said that early sales were off to a better start than both the original iPhone and iPad. While analysts are still gazing into their crystal balls and trying to come up with numbers, the truth is that no one but Apple really knows how well the Apple Watch is selling.

Apple’s suppliers could provide some valuable hints. For example, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Advanced Semiconductor Engineering, a company that supplies the system-in-package (SiP) that holds most of the electronic components, told investors last week that it had not reached its “break-even volume” of two million units per month in the second quarter. Perhaps more telling, the company also warned that it would not reach this level during the third quarter either. This last is a busy production period that leads into the holiday season, typically a peak selling time for electronic manufacturers.

There have been hints before that Apple had reduced component orders for its first smartwatch. This latest report suggests that there could be truth to the story that Apple Watch sales are not meeting company expectations. At the same time, at least one research firm found tha they do appear to be strong enough to give Apple a dominant 75% share of the smartwatch market in Q2 2015.

Until Apple reveals some actual numbers, we may well continue to see reports weigh in with conflicting data. How well do you think the Apple Watch is selling? Let us know below.
