Canalys: 7 million Apple Watches shipped since launch

Apple WatchWith Apple staying mum on exactly how many Apple Watches it has shipped since the launch back in April, market analysis firms are putting their crystal balls to work to guess what that number may be. Canalys now estimates that nearly 7 million Apple Watch smartwatches have shipped since launch. In other words, Apple’s shipments over the last two quarters are more than the combined shipments of all other vendors over the previous five quarters.

Echoing earlier findings by IDC (which itself estimates Apple Watch shipments at 8.9 million units), Canalys found that Apple completely dominates the smartwatch market. It was the only manufacturer to ship more than 300,000 smartwatches in Q3 2015. In comparison, Pebble shipped about 200,000 Pebble Time Steel watches over the same time period while Samsung saw Gear shipments fall ahead of the launch of the Gear S2.

“After experiencing significant supply chain constraints early on, Apple managed to overcome its production struggles with the Apple Watch and is building momentum going into Q4,” said Analyst Daniel Matte. “Shipments are steadily increasing as it has greatly expanded the Watch’s channel footprint internationally.”

With the holiday season coming up, look for the number of Apple Watches shipped to set new records in Q4 2015.

Meanwhile, the basic wearable device market is dominated by Fitbit and Xiaomi. In fact, the Xiaomi Mi Band surpassed the 10 million units shipped milestone in Q3.
