We first found out about the MMT Horological Smartwatch Open Platform when the Mondaine Helvetica No 1 Smart was announced late last month. MMT is a Swiss joint venture between Silicon Valley’s Fullpower Technologies and Switzerland’s Union Horlogere Holdings. The initial licensees include not only Mondaine but Frederique Constant which unveiled its Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch at Baselworld this week.
The Swiss Horological Smartwatch is the synthesis of high-tech innovation and traditional Swiss watch craftsmanship; it is the link (no pun intended) between modern and classic, and the bridge between Silicon Valley and Switzerland. There is no digital screen on the Swiss Horological Smartwatch. Instead, the beautiful laser cut hands on the watch dial display information in analog form. The Swiss Horological Smartwatches retain their natural classic beauty and can deliver the benefits of the quantified self, all without ever having to recharge a battery.
An analogue subdial, billed the “smart” counter, at the 6 o’clock mark tracks both the date and tracks your progress against your activity or sleep goals. Compatible with both Android and iOS, it supports MotionX activity tracking, Sleeptracker sleep monitoring, sleep cycle alarms, Get-Active alerts and adaptive coaching. The watch itself provides only progress tracking while the smartphone app provides all the specific details.
Much as we have seen with other smartwatches that retain a traditional mechanical display, the Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch will not require daily charging. Battery life is rated at 2+ years.
The Frederique Constant Horological Smartwatch sports a 42mm case available in either rosegold plated or stainless steel cases with brown or black leather straps or a metal one.
The Frédérique Constant Horological Smartwatch will be available starting in June. Prices will start at €950 (about CA$1300).
